On 28 and 29 October 2020 (from 10 am to 3 pm), a stress management workshop, organized by the Doctoral School of Ilia State University (ISU) and run by Prof. Nino Makhashvili, will be held for PhD students.
The workshop has the following goals:
- improve participants understanding of stress responses, their evolutionary benefits and neurophysiological mechanisms;
- Raise awareness of the adverse effects of stress and long-term stress, in particular;
- Provide training in main techniques of stress management with a view to promoting self-care.
Topics:
- What is stress?
- Stress responses
- Conditioned responses, triggers and possible adverse effects
- Deep, long-term stress and related mental health problems
- Why is self-care important?
- Stress management: coping strategies
- Stress management: relaxation and concentration exercises
- Stress management: mindfulness and guided imagery
The workshop will be delivered via Zoom, in the Georgian language. It is designed for ISU’s second- through eighth-semester PhD students with Active Student Status.
Preference will be given to doctoral students enrolled in joint programmes of the International Doctoral School. Applicants will be selected on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Applicants who are not doctoral students will be placed on a reserve list. The maximum number of participants is 10.

In the case of missing the workshop without a three-day prior notice, selected doctoral students will be denied an opportunity to attend training sessions throughout one year.

The workshop has been organized in cooperation with the ISU Mental Health Resource Centre.
On the trainer:
Professor Nino Makhashvili is head of ISU Mental Health Resource Centre and one of the founders of master’s programme in Mental Health; in 2017, she joined the doctoral programme of the ISU Business School with her course on community-based participatory research.
