VASIL METREVELI’S PRESENTATION AT THE DOCTORAL FORUM

On the 27th of May 2020, Vasil Metreveli participant of the Carl Friedrich Lehmann- Haupt International Doctoral Program, gave a talk about his ongoing doctoral research project “Chestnut ecology in the Caucasus”. He discussed about the study of European-sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) ecology in the Caucasus. Vasil studies chestnut (Castanea sativa) distribution patterns in the Caucasus region and in Europe. As well as the suitable habitats of Chestnut and has prepared the maps of its distribution. He also studies historical and current challenges for
Chestnut, caused by abiotic and biotic factors, as one of the main tree species represented in the region. On the forum he mentioned several problems which have biggest influence on this particular species and makes it vulnerable throughout the region. For achieving his PhD goals, Vasil uses different analytical methods and programs. After the presentation, audience gave him very useful feedback. There was discussion about the ecological problems in the forest ecosystems as in general, also in the direction of the particular Chestnut stands distributed in
Georgia.
The doctoral forum takes place once a month and is organized by ISU’s International Doctoral
School.
